NFPA 1901 Compliance

To be NFPA 1901 compliant, …”at least 50 percent of rear-facing vertical surfaces, visible from the rear of the apparatus, excluding any pump panel areas not covered by a door, shall be equipped with retro reflective striping in a chevron pattern sloping downward and away from the centerline of the vehicle at an angle of 45 degrees.”

NFPA 1901 - BODY, COMPARTMENTS, AND EQUIPMENT MOUNTING (Excerpt)

15.9.3* Reflective Striping.

15.9.3.1* A retroreflective stripe(s) shall be affixed to at least 50 percent of the cab and body length on each side, excluding the pump panel areas, and at least 25 percent of the width of the front of the apparatus.

15.9.3.1.1 The stripe or combination of stripes shall be a minimum of 4 in. (100 mm) in total width.

15.9.3.1.2 The 4 in. (100 mm) wide stripe or combination of stripes shall be permitted to be interrupted by objects (i.e., receptacles, cracks between slats in roll up doors) provided the full stripe is seen as conspicuous when approaching the apparatus.

15.9.3.1.3 A graphic design shall be permitted to replace all or part of the required striping material if the design or combination thereof covers at least the same perimeter length(s) required by 15.9.3.1.

15.9.3.2 At least 50 percent of the rear-facing vertical surfaces, visible from the rear of the apparatus, excluding any pump panel areas not covered by a door, shall be equipped with retroreflective striping in a chevron pattern sloping downward and away from the centerline of the vehicle at an angle of 45 degrees.

15.9.3.2.1 Each stripe in the chevron shall be a single color alternating between red and either yellow, fluorescent yellow, or fluorescent yellow-green.

15.9.3.2.2 Each stripe shall be 6 in. (150 mm) in width.

15.9.3.3 All retroreflective materials required by 15.9.3.1 and 15.9.3.2 shall conform to the requirements of ASTM D 4956, Standard Specification for Retroreflective Sheeting for Traffic Control, Section 6.1.1 for Type I Sheeting.

15.9.3.3.1 All retroreflective materials used to satisfy the requirements of 15.9.3.1 that are colors not listed in ASTM D 4956, Section 6.1.1, shall have a minimum coefficient of retroreflection of 10 with observation angle of 0.2 degrees and entrance angle of -4 degrees.

15.9.3.3.2 Fluorescent yellow and fluorescent yellow-green retroreflective materials used to meet the requirements of 15.9.3.2 shall conform to the minimum requirements specified for yellow Type I Sheeting in ASTM D 4956, Section 6.1.1.

ESTIMATING & INSTALLATION GUIDE

These easy-to-apply decals come in 1” wide x 50' long strips. Just follow the easy formula below to determine how many strips you need to complete the job, place your order online, and before you know it, the reflective diamond decal strips will arrive so you can get started!

1-Figure It!
Start by estimating, in square feet, the area you want to cover with reflective diamonds. Take the total square feet and multiply it by 13.

This will give you the total number of linear feet you'll need. If you are using more than one color, divide the total linear footage by the number of colors to determine how many linear feet of each color you will need to complete the job.

Example:
4 ft. x 4 ft. area to cover
4 ft. x 4 ft. = 16 square feet
16 sq. ft. x 13 = 208 linear feet of diamond decals

For a 2 color chevron:
416 linear feet divided by 2 (colors) = 208 linear feet of each color
208 feet of 1st color, 208 feet of 2nd color

2-Order It!

DiamonDiamonds are sold in two foot strips. To estimate the number of strips you need for your job, take the linear feet for each color and divide by two:

208 linear feet of 1st color divided by 2 = 104 strips
208 linear feet of 2nd color divided by 2 = 104 strips

Select your color preference from the drop down box below and enter the number of strips. It's that simple.

3-Install It!
IMPORTANT:Make sure the diamond plate area is clean! Wash with soap and water to remove any dirt. If diamond plate is not new, we recommend a quality Aluminum & Metal Cleaner. Follow up with a final cleaning using Isopropyl Alcohol.

After surface area is dry, begin laying out your desired chevron pattern. Using a non-permanent marking pen, designate the top center of your area. Place a dark colored diamond at the highest point as close to center as possible. This will ensure a symmetrical layout when you are finished. Proceed at a downward angle filling in the desired number of rows to complete your first dark stripe. Once the first stripe is complete, the rest is easy! Just continue filling in the diamond plate with the same number of rows (6 rows for NFPA 1901 compliance) for each stripe alternating the colors from dark to light as you go.

For the most professional looking installation, DiamonDiamonds can be trimmed to fill in half spaces at the edges of your stripes. DiamonDiamonds come pre-spaced for easy install. Simply cut the desired length you feel comfortable applying and separate the pre-masked DiamonDiamonds from the release liner. Discard the liner and hold the remaining pre-masked DiamonDiamonds in both hands end to end. Place both ends over the area you wish to cover and press one end to the surface. Continue pressing the DiamonDiamonds down as you go from one end to the other. After all of the DiamonDiamonds have been pressed firmly to the surface, carefully remove the clear transfer film leaving the DiamonDiamonds on the surface.
