Life Guard Particulate Resistant Firefighting Hood

The Life Guard Hood blocks particulates to reduce exposure to toxins. The Life Guard Particulate Resistant Hood is Honeywell’s latest breakthrough in safety and comfort for first responders. The Life Guard Hood is specifically engineered to protect your neck, and throat – which are highly sensitive to toxins – with a resilient, lightweight design that’s as comfortable as it is dependable.

  • Materials: Knit: Carbon/ Kevlar®/ Lenzing FR®, Composite – 6.0 osy Nomex®, PTFE moisture barrier, 4.5 osy Nomex®
  • Weight: Knit: 16.0 osy, Composite: 5.2 osy
  • TPP: Knit: 29, Composite: 24
  • THL: Knit: 371, Composite: 364-386 W/m2
  • Advanced Design: Revolutionary new hood concept designed by Honeywell’s top garment design and engineering team balances protection, comfort and utility.
  • Protective: Blocks carcinogenic particulates in both air and water, and the loose design promotes safe airflow around the head and neck.
  • Durable: Tough, proven materials increase resilience and wear life.
  • Breathable: Lightweight materials maximize breathability and minimizes heat stress.
How it Works
The hybrid design gives protection where it’s needed most while optimizing comfort and utility. By replacing the traditional “sock hood” design with a lighter, looser, more breathable fit, the Life Guard Hood promotes the safe flow of air around your head and neck while a fire service-trusted moisture barrier blocks exposure to hazardous particulates. The result: an innovative hood that is lightweight, comfortable, and keeps you dry even after long hours of wear. It may look different, but the Life Guard Hood deploys just like a traditional hood and readily integrates with your self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and turnout gear to ensure the highest level of protection.
Why it Matters
New building materials have made structure fires far more hazardous. Modern synthetics release lethal gases and toxins when burned. Studies show that the skin and glands of the neck and face are especially prone to absorbing toxins, and some cancer rates have now been proven to be higher for firefighters than the general population. (See the Firefighter Cancer Support Network’s white paper on Cancer in the Fire Service for more info - click here).
Proven Performance
The groundbreaking particulate exposure test conducted by the IAFF in 2015 opened all of our eyes to the issue of particulate penetration through traditional hoods. Honeywell repeated this exact test with the Life Guard Hood with outstanding results. The Fluorescent Aerosol Screening Test (FAST) test demonstrated actual particulate resistance of the complete product in a simulated fire environment.
Size Head Circumference Dress Cap Size
S 20 - 20-3/4" 6-1/2, 6-5/8, 6-3/4"
M 21-7/8 - 22-7/8" 6-7/8, 7, 7-1/8"
L 23 - 24" 7-1/4, 7-3/8, 7-1/2", 8"
XL 24-1/8 - 25-1/4" 7-5/8, 7-3/4, 7-7/8, 8"

Head circumference is measured by the maximum circumference of the head above the ears, just above the eyebrow ridge and around the back of the head.

What’s different?
The Life Guard hood offers particulate and liquid protection not found in standard hoods.

Why can’t I still use a regular Hood?
You can but it does not offer protection from carcinogenic particulates.

Why is it so expensive?
The performance materials are much more expensive than standard knits as well as the workmanship required for the advanced design.

How will it protect the wearer better?
The PTFE barrier completely blocks particulates, just like moisture barriers found in your turnouts. So the particles that easily pass through a standard hood are blocked from depositing on the users skin.

How often should I wash it?
It’s best to wash it right away to remove the stiffness of the fabric then after each fire exposure. Honeywell's wash testing has demonstrated performance past 50 wash/dry cycles.

What should the user do different when wearing it?
Not much. The use of woven materials does alter the doffing experience in that it doesn’t just stretch off your head no matter how you pull it. It is best to pull the bottom edge over the chin and then pull the hood straight up off the head.

How do I choose a size?
1) Sizing chart - The sizing chart is based on firefighter head measurements. Use a tape measure and measure the circumference of the head above the eyebrows and just over the ears. Alternatively if the users cap size is already
known this can also be referenced on the size chart to select a hood size.
2) Try one on. We’ve also found some prefer to just try on the different sizes prior to selecting. Most users will fall will be Medium or Large.

Why is the Honeywell hood better than other hoods claiming particulate resistance?
1) Protection – Honeywell’s Life Guard Hood provides particulate blocking protection not just filtration. Honeywell is the only manufacturer that has performed full FAST testing to prove the particulate blocking performance of the hood in a simulated use
environment. Also the material composite has been tested to block 99.9% of particulates when tested to the modified ASTM F2299 NFPA has proposed in the next edition of the 1971 standard.
2) Comfort – The new looser design allows for air space between the hood and the users body. No more wet, dirty material rubbing tight on the skin. Also the use of the barrier naturally keeps the user drier.
