Full Drape VFD Style - Double head and bib layers finish approximately 13 inches in the back, 11 inches in the front, and 9 inches of the sides from the "reference plane". On the sides, the bib is slightly notched to accommodate the shoulders. This hood features elastic reinforced face opening and one seam running from the top midpoint of the face opening, up over the crown and down mid-back to hem.
Why is the ventilating hood styling so significant?
Stress (by a huge margin) is the leading cause of firefighter death. The crown of the head is the most efficient site for dissipation of body heat/stress. Traditionally styled firefighters hoods provide vital face and neck protection but "seal" the ventilating crown area.
The new ventilating style hood retains valuable face, neck, and upper chest/ back protection , but through the insertion of open weave PBI mesh facilitates heat escape through the stress critical crown area. Since the helmet provides excellent thermal protection at the crown area, the extra crown insulation of traditionally styled hoods is non-functional (as well as stressful).
The difference in fire ground comfort and stress buildup is truly amazing, we encourage you to try a ventilating hood now. Stress management must be a primary goal in protective clothing design and the ventilating hood is an important new weapon in that battle.
Pbi/PFR Rayon (2-Layer wt. 12.0 oz.) Bronze in color, the 6.0 oz. Knit is a 20% Pbi, 80% PFR Rayon blend. Yet another step up in heat resistance, it also handles extremely well and is often chosen as being the most comfortable of the materials. While a bit more expensive, it has been the choice for overall best insulation, heat resistance, and comfort for almost 15 years. (TPP before/after wash...30.0/35.2)
