For over 85 years flashlight functionality has changed very little. Sizes and shapes have changed; light sources and power supply have progressed exponentially. But the way a flashlight is used has remained pretty much the same. Professional grade flashlights have always been employed to spot objects at a distance—a task that most quality tactical or duty flashlights perform well. But using a professional tactical or patrol-type flashlight to illuminate objects at close range is another story. Too much concentrated light can make observation difficult, often washing out the subject in the bright beam and compromising night-adapted vision. Multiple light levels can help, but on lower settings the greatly reduced peripheral light of the standard beam pattern can dangerously reduce the ability to pick up important objects or critical movement on the edge of vision. But outside of carrying a separate wide area lighting system, law enforcement and military professionals had few options.
