With its comfortably rounded full-size textured grip and large thumb hole (instead of studs) in it’s extremely strong 3 ½” Sheepsfoot blade, the 550HG Griptilian® is easier handle, open, and use while wearing protective gloves. The modified Sheepsfoot blade configuration has made it an ideal choice for EMS and Rescue professionals for several reasons. The longer, curved cutting edge is extremely effective for slicing applications. Plus the lack of a point at the tip makes it both less intimidating and less likely to injure a frightened crash victim when you’re trying to slice through a seatbelt or cut away restrictive clothing to treat a wound. Benchmade has improved this popular, rather specialized blade configuration by giving it a hollow grind. Hollow ground blades are thinner and therefore yield a sharper cutting edge, with very little sacrifice in durability.

BENCHMADE FEATURES EXPLAINED:

154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality. HRC 58-60.

SHEEPSFOOT: This blade shape has no point on the tip, little to no belly, and a spine that curves down to meet the edge. It is used in applications where slicing is the main requirement and a point is either not needed or would actively get in the way. It’s the top choice for emergency rescue knives because the lack of a point prevents the rescuer from inadvertently injuring a victim who is being cut free from something restrictive.

NORYL GTX®: A modern engineered plastic offering high-strength, minimal flex and optimally lightweight properties. Molded to form.

AXIS®: A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it’s inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

Reversible Carry-Clip comes installed on the right side (or non-Benchmade logoed side of blade) of AXIS knife products for right side pocket carry. If you prefer to clip-carry the knife in the left side pocket, it is important that you remount the carry-clip on the other side of the knife handle. This is recommended for ideal access and optimum user safety.
